(English follows) 独特なドライブ感のあるベースラインのトラックに定評があり、今やベルギーの次世代を担うアーティストであろうHermanezが1月27日名古屋、28日に渋谷moduleにやってくる。GWに来日を予定していた公演が延期になり、今回は待望の初来日。[Tronic、Kling Klong]や[Circle Music]、[Monique Musique]などからヒット曲をリリースし、Laurent Garnier、Sven Vath、Christian Smith、Loco DiceなどトップDJから熱いサポートを受け、DJ／トラックメーカーだけでなく現在[Aella Music]をRamon Tapiaと立ち上げるなど勢力的に活動。今や世界が注目する彼のプレイは必見！！そんな多忙な日々を過ごしているHermanezがインタビューを受けてくれた。

15年活動した今でもこの人生を選んだことを全く後悔していません。

- こんにちは。はじめに自己紹介も兼ねて、あなたのこれまでの活動を教えてください。-

Hermanez : こんにちは。HermanezことMichaleです。私は、音楽が大好きで15年前にDJを始めました。エレクトロニックミュージックが盛んなGenkというベルギーの小さな街で育ちました。これまで特別に音楽を勉強したり、レッスンを受けたことはありません。音楽知識はDJを始めてから培い、19歳の時に楽曲制作を勉強し始めました。自分が興味ある”音楽”をやっているので、15年活動した今でもこの人生を選んだことを全く後悔していません。

- ダンスミュージックに興味を持つようになったきっかけは? -

私は音楽がずっと好きで、もう少し何かできないかと常に考えていました。15年前のベルギーのダンスミュージックシーンは素晴らしく、そこで何かをやりたくなりました。

- もっとも印象深かったギグは? -

思い出に残るギグは沢山経験しました。あえて1つ選ぶなら、ベルリンにあるTresorでのクロージングパーティーでプレイしたことです。当初は1時間半プレイする予定でしたが、最終的には７時間、次の日の昼までプレイしました。こんな経験はしたことがなく、イベントの雰囲気はとても良かったです。あれは一生忘れられません。

- 世界中を飛び回ってもっとも刺激を受けることは何ですか? -

新しい場所を訪れると、自分の気持ちが新しくなりDJプレイに磨きがかかる。新しい人達の前で、新しいモチベーションと共に音楽がついてく…それはまるで魔法のように刺激的なことだと思います。

アーティストがファミリーとして一緒に音楽を広めていけるレーベルを立ち上げようと決めました。

- 楽曲制作する際の機材環境を教えてください。また制作時に心掛けていることは? -

私のスタジオには、コンピューターとハードウェアの2つのセクションがあります。DAWはCUBASE 6 を使っていて、もう何年も使っているお気に入りのソフトです。ハードウェアを多く利用するのですが、CUBASEのMIDI機能は素晴らしい！
スタジオで良い時間を過ごすには、その時の気分が影響すると思うのですが…まぁ私の場合はスタジオでの気分がトラック制作に大きな影響を与えますね。

- [Aella Music]のコンセプト、立ち上げた経緯を教えてください。 -

私の周りも含め、現在のシーンには才能のあるアーティストが沢山います。そこで、アーティストがファミリーとして一緒に音楽を広めていけるレーベルを立ち上げようと決めました。

- 今、注目しているアーティストはいますか? -

Alex Costa は素晴らしいですね。また、Alli Boremも良い音楽を制作していて、ビッグチューンをリリースしています。彼らは、[Aella-Music]とも契約しました。

- 今後のリリースやレーベルなどの活動予定についてお聞かせください。 -

2012年3月にNew Yorkの[inmotion]から、そして4月にはドイツの[Trapez LTD]からリリース予定で、とても楽しみにしています。自身のレーベルでは、Deltanoのリリースを予定していて、彼はオリジナルのビッグチューンを2曲製作し、Aella（HermanezとRamon Topiaのコラボレーションプロジェクト）の曲もリミックスしてくれました。後は、Alli Borem、Alex Costaなどのリリースが控えています。是非[Aella Music]のWebサイトで是非チェックしてください。

- 今回、初来日となりますが、日本についての印象や楽しみな事はありますか? -

私の叔父が何年も前に日本を訪れ、日本には文化を含め沢山インスピレーションがあると言っていました。日本のシーンについては、他のアーティストからもとても素晴らしいと聞いています。遠い国に訪れて、自分の好きなことができるのはとても素晴らしいです。初来日をとても楽しみにしています。


- 最後に日本のファンにメッセージをお願いします。 -

日本でのサポート、そして、今回呼んでくれてありがとう！イベントが待ち遠しいです！

- First of all, it’s nice to meet you. Could you introduce yourself and tell us your background? -

I’m Michael aka Hermanez, Started 15 years ago with deejaying because I loved music so much, raised in a small town (genk) in Belgium with lot of electronic activity. Basically I never did some educations or lessons, all my knowledge was based on interests during the years, on the age of 19 I started to learn producing. Also based on own interests, so now 15 years later I don’t regret I ever choose this way of life.

- What got you into dance music in the first place? -

I was always in love with music and wanted a bit more of  it. In first case it was scene that I liked a lot. 15 years ago in Belgium was a great scene, and I just wanted to be part of it.

- What was the most memorable gig you have played so far? -

I played lots of memorable gigs so far, but if I only could give one, then my most memorable gig was  playing the closing at Tresor in Berlin. I supposed to play 1,5 hour my set.. but at the end I played 7 hours till noon. Something like that I never met before and the atmosphere was so nice.. something  for never to forget.

- What kind of inspiration do you gain from going all over the world and play? -

What most people say when they travel a lot is “it more complete”, well in my case, this is also with music. Especially my deejay set went more updated because my feeling was also new on the place I was. The experience was totally on a different way.. the music came among my new feeling in front of new people.. It’s magic!

- Could you tell us about equipment you use for the music production? Also is there anything particular that you keep in mind when producing music? -

My studio set up exist out of 2 sections: the box and hardware section. The daw is cubase 6 and for me my favorite production software for years.. especially for his midi variety. Because I use quite a lot of hardware.
Second thing is, to have a nice time in the studio will depends a lot on your morality. This will guide you almost through your way in building a track.. well for me it does in most cases.

- What is the concept behind [Aella Music] and its background starting this label? -

There are so many new talent in the scene these days, so around me are people doing the same thing. so we decided to start up a label to make it in family way to help us get our music spread.

- Are there any particular artist that you keep your eyes on at the moment? -

There’r some great artistst at the moment doing a great job, Iwatch out on lot of them.. like Alex Costa is doing a great job, also Alli Borem is making and releasing a lot of huge tracks. I signed both on my label [Aella Music].

- Please let us kno your forthcoming release schedule and activities on the label. -

My next releases will be in March on [Inmotion (NY)] and in April on [Trapez LTD (GR)]. Really looking forward for that! Regarding the label we are now focused on the next release from Deltano. He made two massive floor tracks with a remix of “Aella” (duo project of Ramon Tapia and myself) next releases will be from Alli Borem, Alex Costa,  and some more to confirm soon.

- This will be your first time ever appearance in Japan. What is your impression? Do you have something particular you’re looking for?  -

My uncle has been in Japan many years ago, he told me lots of  inspiring things about the country and the culture, these days I hear and see many good things about the scene and appreciation in music at lot of places in Japan.. it’s very nice to get invited so far away from home and do the thing I like most. ! So exciting to see Japan for the first time!!

■ JONNY ROCK

ロンドン在住のDJ/プロデューサー。現在ロンドンのアンダーグラウンド・ハウスシーン で最も異色な輝きを見せる [Music For Freaks] 所属のバンド・ユニットFreaksのメンバーでギターを担当している。かつてLuke SolomonとKenny HawksがクラブBar Rumbaで行っていたパーティ “Space” でのDJプレイにLukeが驚き、レジデントDJとして抜擢されるという逸話がある。その後、ギタリストとしてFreaksに加入。アルバム『The Man Who Lived Underground』をリリース後、2003年には “Homelands Festival” にも出演を果たす。 [Phonica Records] や [Black Market] などのロンドンの老舗レコードショップのバイヤーを勤めた彼のDJには定評があり、今は無き名門クラブThe Endにてレーベル [Classic Music Company] の大人気パーティ “Classic Party” で、Derrick Carter、Luke Solomonと並んで頻繁にプレイをしていた。2004年には [Music For Freaks] から初のミックスCD『See You @The Party』をリリース。2005年からはプロデューサー業も本格的にスタートし、MFFから初ソロEP「3 steps to Heaven, 4 steps to Rock」のリリースを皮切りにドイツの [Playhouse] やRob Melloが運営する [DISCO45] からもシングルをリリース。近年はRadio Slaveシークレット・ウエポン・シリーズ [The Cabin Fever Trax] や [W+L Black] [Foot & Mouth]などからエディット作品を発表するほど、膨大なディスコやハウスクラシックエディットをストックし、これまでにmoduleやelevenに て来日公演を行いフロアを埋め尽くしたオーディエンスを圧倒した。

良いギグは小さなイベントです。お客さんとの親近感があり、特別なバイブを作ります。

- はじめまして。-

Neil Quigley(以下Neil):はじめまして！


- まず初めに、あなたの音楽的バックグランドを聞かせてください。-

Neil:子供の時からアイルランドの色々な民族音楽を楽器を演奏していました。しかし、あまりこのスタイルの音楽は好みではありませんでした。
それよりも、Jean Michelle Jarre のアルバムやその他のエレクトロニックミュージックを好んで聞いていました。
子供の頃に音楽を勧めてくれてた両親には感謝しています。音楽的な耳を訓練できましたからね。


-ダンスミュージックに興味を持つようになったきっかけは？-

Neil:10代前半にアシッドハウスが流行になり、すぐに魅了されました。しかし、最初はトップチャートに入っているメジャーな曲しか知りませんでした。
Inner Cityの「Good Life」、D’Mobの「 We Call It Acieed」、 S-Expressの「Theme From S-Express」などです。
アシッドハウスは、このような曲しかジャンルに無いと当初は思っていました。しかし、後に友達と一週間くらい旅行に行き、あるDJと出会いました。
そこで、アシッドハウスには自分の知っている以外にも沢山の曲があることを知り、大きなムーブメントが存在していることも知りました。
その時に、このカルチャーに入り込みたくなりましたね。


-楽曲制作するに際の機材環境を教えてください。また制作するのに心掛けていることは？-

Neil:楽曲は、LogicとAbketon Liveを使っています。あとは、Maschine と色々なソフトシンセを使っています。アナログのシンセは一つも持っていませんが、欲しいコルグのビンテージシンセがあって、近々ゲットしたいと思っています。



-最も印象深かったギグは？-

Neil:素晴らしいギグは沢山経験しました。私の経験から、良いギグは小さなイベントです。お客さんとの親近感があり、特別なバイブを作ります。
しかし、Fabricでの最初のギグは特別でした。ずっとあそこではプレイしたいと思っていましたからね。


-もし、あなたがDJやアーティストととして活動していなかったら、何を志したと思いますか？-

Neil:想像がつきませんね。私にとって音楽無しの人生は考えられないです。けど子供の時は宇宙飛行士になりたかったから、もしかしたらそれかもしれませんね。


-休日の過ごし方を教えてください。

Neil:映画を良く観ます。どちらかと言えばドキュメンタリー系が多いです。ハリウッドの幻想的な大作よりも、リアルな人生を描いた作品の方が面白いですからね。
また、サッカー観戦、妻や友達と時間を過ごすことも多いです。


-これまであなたの人生で、1番音楽的な成果はなんですか？その理由も教えてください。

Neil:幸いな事に私はDJとして世界中を旅する事ができています。しかし、アーティストとしての1番音楽的な成果を作るのは未だこれからだと思います。


- 仲のいいアーティストは誰ですが？

Neil:Futureshockとして活動していた、Nick MuirとPhil Dockertyは仲の良い友達です。
彼らには何年もの間、楽曲制作のアドバイスをもらったりと色々お世話になっています。





- または、今、注目しているアーティストはいますか？

Neil:イタリア出身のデュオ、Tone Floatは素晴らしいアーティストです。彼らは、これから飛躍することを期待しています。
また、Stimming、Martin Buttrich、Gabriel Ananda などは非常にハイクオリティな楽曲を制作しています。トラックのリリース数よりもクオリティーが物を言っています。


-今後のリリースや活動予定についてお聞かせください

Neil:現在は、DJセットで良くプレイするハウスのEPを制作中です。また、Tone Float とのコラボレーションも行っています。これはとても楽しみです。
リミックスでは、Taras van de Voorde and Estroeのトラックのリミックスワークを終え、現在は、Time writer and Terry Lee Brow の「REFiNE 」、Hernan Cattaneo の「Sudbeat」のリミックスを制作しています。


-最後に日本のファンにメッセージをお願いします。

- First of all, it’s really nice to meet you.-

- Could you tell us about your musical background?-

Well as a child I played Irish folk music on a variety of instruments but to be honest I didn’t enjoy this style of music, preferring to listen to my Jean Michelle Jarre albums and other electronica. But I’m still thankful to my parents for pushing me to learn and develop my musical ear.

- What triggered you to get into dance music?-

In my early teens acid house came along and I was instantly captivated, but I was only really exposed to the tracks that infiltrated the mainstream music charts, such as Inner City’s ‘Good Life’, D’Mob’s ‘We Call It Acieed’ and S-Express’ ‘Theme From S-Express’. I thought these few records were the only ones of their type. However soon after I went on holiday with a friend and we met a DJ, and over the course of the week I learned that not only were there many more tracks like this, but there was indeed a whole movement that I now felt compelled to be part of.

- Could you tell us about equipment you use for the production? Also is there anything particular that you keep in mind for your production?-

I use a combination of Logic and Ableton, plus a Maschine and a variety of soft synths. I confess I don’t own any hard synths, but I do have my eyes on a couple of vintage Korgs which I hope to get soon.

- What is the most memorable gig/event so far?-

I’ve had many great gigs, and from experience it’s usually the smaller more intimate parties that have been the most fun, they always create a particularly special vibe. However my first gig at London’s Fabric was special, as I had always wanted to play there.

- If you have not gotten into career as DJ/Artist, what else do you think you have pursued in your life?-

I have no idea, I can’t imagine my life without music. But I always wanted to be an astronaut as a kid, so maybe that J

- What do you normally do when you have day off?-

I enjoy watching movies, but moreso documentaries, in most cases real life is much more interesting than what Hollywood can dream up. I also like going to watch football and spending time with my wife and friends.

- What do you think the most remarkable achievement as a music artist that you have done so far? And what is the reason behind it?-

I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve been able to travel the world DJing, but I feel my best achievements are yet to come.

- Which artists are you close friend with?-

I’m good friends with Nick Muir, and Phil Dockerty, formerly of Futureshock. Both have given me great production advice and tutelage over the years.

- Also, is there any particular artist(s) that you have your eye’s on at the moment?-

Tone Float is a fantastically talented duo from Italy and I expect big things from them in the future. They, and more established artists like Stimming, Martin Buttrich and Gabriel Ananda have extremely high production values and I believe it’s the quality of your music that shines through rather than quantity.

- Could you tell us about your up coming releases as well as plan for any music career?-

Right now I’m working on very housey EP, representative of what I’m playing in my sets right now, plus a collaboration with Tone Float which I’m very excited about. Remix wise, I’ve just fnished one for Taras van de Voorde and Estroe, and am currently working on another two – for Timewriter and Terry Lee Brown’s new REFiNE label, plus Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat.

- Lastly, could you give us message to fans in Japan?-

Come and party with me at Module on August 5th, I’m really looking forward to meeting you!
